A Newcastle restaurant is looking to the humble allotment for inspiration this August.

artisan, located in The Biscuit Factory – the UK’s largest arts, craft and design gallery – hosts its ‘Allotment Harvest’ Seasonal Showcase on Wednesday, 3 August 2016.

The seven-course tasting menu, created by award-winning Head Chef Andrew Wilkinson, begins with a welcome drink and tartare of line caught mackerel with chilled cucumber, compressed apple and dill.

This is followed by truffle whipped goat’s curd and North Country garden salad; a serving of scallop and crab mousse with courgette flower, greenhouse tomatoes and basil; and then braised veal cheek with allotment vegetables, girolles and ratte pomme puree.

A lemon posset with blueberries, yoghurt and meringue; and savarin of summer fruits with vanilla cream complete the menu.

Restaurant manager, Jaime McGuigan says: “August’s tasting menu spotlights simple yet classic ingredients found in allotments up and down the region. From apples and tomatoes to a garden salad – we’re showcasing some of this season’s best locally sourced produce, but with artisan’s signature twist.”

The à la carte restaurant, which features in this year’s Good Food Guide, hosts its Seasonal Showcase on the first Wednesday of every month.

The six or seven-course tasting menu celebrates an ingredient, a type of cooking or time of year.  In the coming months, diners can enjoy menus that take inspiration from woodlands, traditional classics and a bonfire.

The ‘Allotment Harvest’ Seasonal Showcase is priced at £42.50 per person. An optional flight of wine is also available. The menu will be served throughout the evening and tables must be booked in advance.
