Christmas is certainly the most wonderful time of the year in Newcastle — Northumberland Street is transformed by Fenwick’s spectacular festive window, buildings are draped with fairy lights, and Christmas markets descend upon the heart of the city.

Organisations and venues also host their own events to celebrate the arrival of the festive season. Here’s our pick of the best family-friendly events that are coming to Newcastle very soon.

Skating @ Life Centre

From 12 November to 26 February, Ice Skating at the Life Centre is back! The ice rink, located in Newcastle’s Times Square, is the perfect place to spend an hour with your nearest and dearest in the lead-up to Christmas. It’s open every day excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Plus, there’s no need to book in advance if you’re visiting with fewer than 10 people. Ice skating at the Life Centre offers an exciting day out that your entire family will adore! Family tickets cost £25, adult tickets are £9 and children over five skate for £7.

Pantomime at The Theatre Royal

From 22 November to 15 January, audiences are invited to enjoy the Theatre’s Royal’s Christmas pantomime, Cinderella. North East comedy trio Danny Adams, Clive Webb and Chris Hayward have joined forces once again to put together an absolutely hilarious show that will have both you and your children crying with laughter. With special effects, outrageous comedies, and an innuendo or two, they’ve brought this spectacular story to life in a wonderful way. You’d be mad to miss it! Ticket prices vary.

Breakfast or Tea with Father Christmas

From 14 November to 24 December, Gosforth, a Wyevale Garden Centre is offering children the chance to have Breakfast or Tea with Father Christmas. Your kids will be able to get into the festive spirit early by sitting down for a meal with Santa Claus himself. Choose from a festive lunch of up to three courses, as well as a range of breakfast and tea options. There’s bound to be an option that your little ones will love. Ticket prices vary.

Sage Gateshead’s Christmas Cracker

On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 of December, Sage Gateshead’s Christmas Cracker will take over the world-renowned music venue. The weekend of festive fun will offer you and your family the chance to browse food, craft and gift stalls. Plus, you’ll all be able to enjoy some fantastic live music, and pay a visit to Santa’s Grotto.

Your kids will adore the range of exciting activities on offer, from face painting to the Great North Snowdogs Little Dogs Trail. Then you can observe an array of cookery demonstrations from Gateshead College students and staff, who will share their skills and some extra-special ideas for your Christmas dinner. Entry costs £1 for adults, and children go free.

Christmas at Beamish

Yes…Beamish isn’t quite Newcastle, however it’s definitely worth a mention!                    From 19 November until Christmas Eve, Christmas at Beamish allows you take a step back in time and experience festive traditions from decades and even centuries ago. You and your kids will be able to visit Santa Claus in his wonderful Grotto, and offer food to his magical reindeer who is stationed outside. You can also give ice skating a go, browse a range of shopping stalls, enjoy some festive food, and catch a steam train ride.

Beamish Museum offers a great day out all year-round, but it’s an especially great place to visit in the wintertime. Unlimited tickets, which allow you to visit Beamish as many times as you would like for a whole year, cost £18.50 for adults and £10.50 for children.

Make the most of the time you spend with your family this Christmas by enjoying some of the wonderful events coming to Newcastle. It’s the perfect way to make sure that you’re all in the festive spirit before Santa Claus delivers your presents!
