Stephenson out to continue scoring streak

Dylan Stephenson is hopeful of continuing his positive goalscoring form in the Premier League 2 ahead of Newcastle United Under-21s' Division Two trip to Aston Villa on Friday evening (kick-off 6pm BST).

The young Magpies, who currently sit in sixth place on seven points, make the long journey to Warwickshire to face the Villans' second-string at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground, aiming to extend their unbeaten Premier League 2 run to four matches.

Stephenson, who has netted four goals in his previous four league matches at under-21 level, praised the squad's recent upturn in results, after losing their opening three league fixtures, and is determined for United's youngsters to register their first away victory of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Blyth-born striker told nufc.co.uk: "We're starting to play a lot better and really show what we are capable of doing in matches. We probably should've picked up a win in our last game (against Middlesbrough) and are certainly picking up good momentum.

"The younger lads, who were my age last year, are starting to adapt to under-21s football and are really getting used to the pace and physicality of the games.

"It would bring a massive boost of confidence to the squad if we can pick up our first away win of the season, especially when we play Southampton at home afterwards which has been one of the more difficult fixtures over the years.

"We all have to credit each other. We've worked very hard, both as a team and individually, and that has shown with the results we've recently picked up in the league. We've got a few new faces in the team this season and we've been bonding very well.

"The application we've shown and adapting to the formation we've been playing in has been very positive."

The 19-year-old striker, who made his first-team debut for his boyhood club during the Magpies' pre-season friendly victory against Athletic Club in July, ended the previous season with 15 goals in all competitions at second-string level, scoring 12 times in the Premier League 2.

The teenage forward, who joined United's academy at the age of 14, has been featuring on the right flank as well as in the centre-forward role but still vows to better last term's impressive tally.

He added: "It gives me a lot of confidence (scoring four goals in four matches). I scored in my last game and I hope to continue that when we play against Villa.

"I definitely want to try and better my record from last season. I always want to score more than I manage in the previous season.

"It's a challenge to be playing in different positions, especially after playing in the one for such a long time, but I'm still able to contribute with goals which is the most pleasing thing."

Supporters are able to attend Friday's Premier League 2 clash at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground but must purchase a ticket in advance, with none available on the day.

The tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2 for under-18s.
