Langley and Donnelly reflect on a transformative year

Written by Joseph Nelson

Newcastle United Women's 9-0 victory over Merseyrail Ladies on Sunday was the Lady Magpies' final match of 2022 - and manager Becky Langley felt it was the perfect way to end a memorable year for her side.

In front of their own supporters at Kingston Park, United put on a show and ensured that they finished the first part of the season in the same way they started it - with an emphatic win.

Following this match, Langley applauded her charges for the performance against Merseyrail.

"It was an excellent win," she told nufc.co.uk. "We were confident in front of goal and everything we have been building towards this season come together.

"It's a fantastic way to sign off 2022!"

Over the past 12 months, the Newcastle boss has seen the transformation of the women's team, and she is excited to see what the future holds.

"The past year has been outstanding," she said. "We have professionalised every inch of the club and will continue to do so and grow.

"We have increased the fan base and we are supporting players and staff better than ever.

"Thank you to the fans for your incredible support. You give so much passion and dedication towards our women's team and we appreciate it."

United captain Grace Donnelly also spoke to nufc.co.uk upon the conclusion of the calendar year for the Lady Magpies, reflecting on 2022 as a whole and adding her own thanks to the supporters.

"This past year has been unbelievable," she said. "Playing at St. James' Park twice, becoming part of the club and watching the fan base grow has been incredible.

"I want to say a huge thank you to all the fans. We appreciate you at every game, and we are grateful for your support.

"I'd like to wish every single one of you an amazing Christmas and a happy New Year."
