From Stateside to Tyneside, Oyos joins Newcastle Women
Written by Joseph Nelson
Newcastle United Women have snapped up American midfielder Gillian Oyos for the beginning of the 2022/23 season.
The playmaker joins the Lady Magpies from Asheville University in North Carolina and will also play under Newcastle Women manager Becky Langley at Northumbria University.
"I'm so excited," said Oyos of her transfer. "The girls have been so welcoming, and Langley is incredible. I'm really excited to get some minutes."
Oyos' arrival further bolsters Langley's midfield ranks, with the likes of Beth Guy, Sharna Wilkinson and fellow summer arrival Freya Bailes all vying for a spot in the starting XI.
Following her arrival on Tyneside, the American explained what she will bring to Newcastle Women's engine room.
She said: "I feel like I can simplify the game and be that force in the middle that gets the ball, settles the game down and distribute it."
Oyos backs her own abilities, and after the Lady Magpies narrowly missed out on promotion last year, she hopes she and her fellow summer signings can help Langley's side achieve success this term.
"For next season we are hoping to raise the club to a whole new level," she declared. "The girls that have been here for a while have done such an incredible job of welcoming in the new players.
"There's such a good, tangible chemistry (in the squad) and I think if we can capitalise on that and take advantage of it every game, we're really going to make some things happen."
