Athletic Club presents flag of friendship to Wor Flags
Athletic Club has presented the Wor Flags group with a special ceremonial flag to mark three decades of firm friendship with Newcastle United.
Athletic Club captain Iker Muniain made the presentation to Wor Flags ahead of the clubs' pre-season friendly at St. James' Park on Saturday afternoon, handing over a flag featuring the crests of both clubs.
United first met Athletic Club in competitive action in the UEFA Cup second round in 1994.
The Magpies won the first leg 3-2 on Tyneside in October 1994, but lost the second leg narrowly to a José Ángel Ziganda goal at the historic San Mamés stadium. After a 3-3 aggregate scoreline, Los Leones prevailed on away goals.
Then, in 2001, United legend Rob Lee selected the Basque club as the opposition for his testimonial, cementing a long-lasting friendship between the clubs and cities.
In a video recorded especially for Newcastle United supporters, Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte outlined the flag gesture and paid tribute to the bond between the clubs and fans.
"Around 30 years ago, our clubs crossed paths for the first time.
"Now, with this opportunity to meet again, we wanted to express the pride we feel in the connection between our two fan bases by presenting you with a flag containing the crests of both our clubs together.
"Aupa Athletic and Howay the Lads!"
Newcastle United warmly welcomes the players, staff and supporters of Athletic Club to St. James' Park and would like to thank them for this wonderful gesture.
