Four more Magpies set for international duty
Written by Tom Easterby
Four more Newcastle United players will be on international duty this summer, with Kieran Trippier among those receiving call-ups.
Trippier has been named in the England squad for their four UEFA Nations League clashes in June, with a trip to Budapest’s Puskás Arena first up on Saturday, 4th June, with kick-off set for 6pm local time.
The Three Lions then head to Munich to face Germany at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, 7th June, with that game set to take place at 8:45pm local time.
The Magpies full back and the rest of Gareth Southgate’s squad then return home to play Italy at Molineux on Saturday, 11th June at 7:45pm BST, before welcoming Hungary to the same venue on Tuesday, 14th June for another 7:45pm BST kick-off.
Trippier, who helped United round off the 2021/22 season with a 2-1 win at Burnley on Sunday in his first start since returning to fitness, currently has 35 caps for his country, and was part of their squad for the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 European Championships.
Centre forward Chris Wood is part of Danny Hay’s New Zealand squad for their two upcoming friendlies and the all-important 2022 World Cup intercontinental play-off clash with Costa Rica.
The All Whites face Peru in a friendly in Barcelona on Sunday, 5th June (kick-off 5:30pm local time) before another friendly against as-yet-unconfirmed opposition in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday, 9th June.
Wood – his country’s all-time leading goalscorer – and his side will then play Costa Rica in Doha on Tuesday, 14th June (kick-off 9pm local time) as they bid to make sure of their place at the World Cup finals later this year.
Fabian Schär, meanwhile, has been named in Switzerland’s Nations League squad for their games against the Czech Republic in Prague on Thursday, 2nd June and against Portugal in Lisbon on Sunday, 5th June.
Murat Yakin’s men then welcome Spain to the Stade de Geneve on Thursday, 9th June before another game against Portugal, also in Geneva, on Sunday, 12th June. All of Switzerland’s matches will kick off at 8:45pm local time.
And young midfielder Elliot Anderson, who recently returned from a hugely successful loan spell at Bristol Rovers, has been named in the Scotland Under-21 squad for their European Championship qualifying double-header next month.
Scot Gemmill’s side travel to Sint-Truden to play Belgium on Sunday, 5th June at 3pm BST before facing Denmark in Vejle on Friday, 10th June (kick-off 5pm BST).
Anderson netted the goal that secured the Gas promotion to League One on the final day of the campaign, wrapping up a promising first loan spell for the 19-year-old.
Bruno Guimarães will also be in action in the close season, having been called up by Brazil earlier this month.
