A committed midfielder who loves a tackle, Hayden began his youth career at Southend United before progressing through the academy at Arsenal.
The son of former Aston Villa youngster Sol Hayden, he joined the Gunners’ youth set-up in 2008 - eventually securing a scholarship in 2011 at the age of 16 and a professional contract in March 2012.
Progressing from captain of the under-18 side to the under-21s, he became a regular England youth international and made his first team debut for Arsenal in March 2013 in a League Cup game against West Bromwich Albion.
Hayden joined Hull City on loan at the start of the 2015/16 season and after playing 24 first team games for the Tigers as they secured promotion to the Premier League, he joined Newcastle on a permanent deal in July 2016.
His tough, calm showings in central midfield helped the Magpies make an immediate return to the top flight in his first season with the club, and he has gone on to establish himself as a solid, consistent performer among English football's elite.
After an injury-hit 2021/22 campaign, he joined Norwich City on loan for the current season.
