Match officials confirmed for Emirates FA Cup tie

Michael Salisbury will be the referee for Newcastle United's Emirates FA Cup third round tie against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Eddie Howe's side travel to South Yorkshire on Saturday evening to face Darren Moore's Owls, who currently occupy second spot in League One, and this will be the second time Salisbury has officiated a fixture involving the Magpies this term.

The Lancashire official was the man in the middle for United's goalless draw against Crystal Palace in September, booking four players that afternoon as well as disallowing Tyrick Mitchell's own goal after adjudging Magpies midfielder Joe Willock to have fouled Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the build-up.

The former PE teacher oversaw the Magpies' FA Cup third round defeat at the hands of League One outfit Cambridge United last year but booked no Newcastle players during the 1-0 loss at St. James' Park.

Born in Penwortham, he began refereeing as a teenager in the local leagues in Preston after being inspired by his dad, Graham, who retired in 2020/21 after taking charge of 588 Football League games.
