Georgia Gibson had given the Lady Magpies the lead at the home of Newcastle's fellow FA Women's National League Division One North side, before the East Yorkshire hosts drew level with just seven minutes remaining.

However, Ferguson popped up with a goal in the first half of extra time to seal the win and ensure the Lady Magpies are in the hat for the next round.

Katie Barker almost opened the scoring at the Easy Buy Stadium within the first minute of the match, but Abi Wallace saved her effort well. Ellie Dobson also went close moments later.

But the hosts responded to Newcastle's early pressure, with Laura Bartup getting into a dangerous area but being unable to get her flick on target.

United captain Grace Donnelly was then forced into action, parrying Hope Knight's powerful effort from the edge of the box.

The first half saw both sides have good opportunities to break the deadlock, with Wallace denying Gibson just minutes before Bartup fired wide, after being sent through one-on-one.

Bartup continued to cause the Lady Magpies problems after the half-time break, hitting a shot narrowly over the bar before seeing a header saved by Donnelly. The Hull striker then went close again, once again being thwarted by the impressive United skipper.

Despite the hosts' pressure, Newcastle found the breakthrough after 65 minutes when Kacie Elson's ball over the top caused panic in the Hull backline, allowing Gibson to pounce and roll the ball home into an empty net.

As the match entered the closing stages, Hull started to pile on the pressure. Donnelly was again on hand to preserve the lead, reacting superbly to save Katie Thompson's shot.

But Newcastle's resilience was broken with just seven minutes remaining, as a rebound was turned in from close range following an effort which was blocked.

Donnelly produced yet another stop in the dying moments of normal time, turning away Knight's powerful strike across goal.

Chances kept coming for both sides in extra time, with Knight hitting wide before Lauren Robson saw a shot saved by Wallace.

Newcastle regained the lead just before the midway point of the additional half-hour when Millie Bell crossed for fellow substitute Ferguson, who stabbed home clinically.

The remainder of the match saw the hosts throw everything at the Lady Magpies, but Langley's side stood firm to see out the win and progress to the next round.

It was a characterful and determined performance from Newcastle on the road and one that the Lasses will no doubt be very proud of.
