Newcastle upon Tyne is famed for many things. For the warmth of its people, for its industrial heritage, its culture, its nightlife, for the Great North Run, for its favourite sons and daughters of sport, screen and music and much, much more.
But it is perhaps known best of all for its beloved football club and the club's incredible supporters - the Toon Army.
Generations of fans have marched to the stadium affectionately known as 'the Cathedral on the Hill' to catch a glimpse of the privileged few who get to wear our iconic black and white stripes in action.
Legends
We've had the Edwardian masters. The cup kings of the '50s and legends of '69. The Entertainers. And so many wonderful goal scorers in our iconic number 9 shirt along the way.
Perhaps the most famous is Alan Shearer, the local boy who scored 206 goals for United. He remains the Premier League’s all-time record goal scorer - a true legend of the game.
He was joined by the likes of Peter Beardsley, David Ginola and Faustino Asprilla in the 1990s. Under Kevin Keegan, the Entertainers thrilled football fans all over the country and beyond, twice finishing as Premier League runners-up.
We've had memorable Champions League campaigns under the late, great Sir Bobby Robson - one of the finest football men that ever lived, a man who transcended the sport in life and still does.
Building a United future
When the team wins, there’s an extra spring in the step of the people of our vibrant city. When the Magpies lose, it's keenly felt from the offices and schools to the factories and pubs across Tyneside.
But the club’s role in the city is even bigger than football.
In 2008, the Newcastle United Foundation was established and has helped us to change the lives of tens of thousands of North East children, young people and their families for the better.
