Newcastle United Under-18s continued their unbeaten start to the 2022/23 campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory against their Arsenal counterparts in the Premier League Cup group stages.

Graeme Carrick's side got off to the perfect start in their Group C clash through Lucas Cooper's early opener at United's Little Benton Academy before the young Magpies trailed at the break following strikes from Elian Quesada-Thorn and Kaleel Green.

The Toon teenagers responded in bright fashion during the second-half, with Ben Parkinson equalising for the hosts before Lewis Miley, who made his debut for England Under-17s last month, sent United's youngsters ahead for the second time.

The 16-year-old, who was named on the Magpies' first-team bench for pre-season friendlies against Atalanta and Athletic Club in July, sealed maximum points in sensational fashion after completing an audacious lob from distance during the latter stages.

In the third minute, Newcastle found themselves ahead as Cooper got onto the end of a teasing cross before the North Shields-born winger turned the ball home from close-range.

The Gunners' youngsters, managed by former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, equalised as Quesada-Thorn controlled Harrison Dudziak's pass before his first-time effort nestled into the bottom corner.

In the 32nd minute, Newcastle fell behind as Green drove towards the Newcastle box and, after exchanging passes with Seb Ferdinand, fired the ball into the net despite Aidan Harris' efforts in-between the sticks.

In the 58th minute, Newcastle equalised through Parkinson's third goal in as many games at under-18 level as the Durham-born forward slotted the ball home following Scott Bailey's dangerous pass.

In the 64th minute, Miley drove the hosts into the lead for the second time in the cup clash as the highly-rated youngster, who made his debut for Newcastle's under-21 side in a Papa John's Trophy game at Doncaster Rovers last week, fired the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Miley, the younger brother of under-21s midfielder Jamie, ensured three points for Newcastle in emphatic style after spotting Arsenal goalkeeper Alexei Rojas off his line before his strike from the halfway line found the right-hand corner.

Newcastle United Under-18s: Aidan Harris, Callum McNally (Rory Powell 69), Dylan Charlton, Scott Bailey, Ciaran Thompson (Harry Powell 88), Charlie McArthur, Lucas Cooper (Shaun Mavididi 75), Ellis Stanton, Ben Parkinson (Nathan Nkunku 88), Lewis Miley, Johnny Emerson.

Subs not used: Taylor Ross.
