Newcastle United Women were knocked out of the FA Women's National League Cup on penalties by Durham Cestria on Sunday afternoon, after playing out an enthralling 0-0 draw at Whitley Park.

Newcastle edged proceedings in normal time, but the sides remained deadlocked throughout the first 90 minutes and the 30 minutes of extra-time. And the visitors had the better of the penalty shootout, scoring every one of their spot-kicks to reach the next round of the competition.

The Lady Magpies flew out of the blocks and within just four minutes, Cestria goalkeeper Megan Borthwick was forced into a reaction save to deny Ellie Dobson at close range.

Becky Langley's side continued to impose themselves on the visitors in the early stages, with Dobson trying her luck from range before Katie Barker went close after being found in the box by Lois Greenslade's smart pass.

The visitors responded to Newcastle's early pressure and saw more possession as the half progressed.

But just after half an hour, the Lady Magpies went closest to breaking the deadlock when Barker unleashed Georgia Gibson in behind with a defence-splitting pass, but Borthwick was equal to the number ten's strike.

Just minutes later Gibson did have the ball in the back of the Durham net, after latching on to another through ball - this time from Becky Ferguson - but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The rest of the first half was tightly contested, and the sides went in level at the break.

Langley's side began the second period with the same intensity as the first, with Greenslade and Gibson combining with Keira Skelton to win a corner, but the resulting set-piece came to nothing.

Gibson continued to cause problems for the visitors after the break and broke in behind once more on 56 minutes, but her centre, intended for Barker, narrowly evaded the striker.

Like in the first half, Cestria looked to gain a foothold after weathering Newcastle's early pressure in the second, but stern defending from Charlotte Potts and Freya Bailes kept the visitors at bay.

As the match entered the closing stages, Grace Donnelly was forced into action, producing superb saves in quick succession to keep the score level.

With just minutes of normal time left to play, Donnelly was again on hand to thwart the visitors, repelling a dipping effort from Jordan Atkinson.

Potts and Barker both almost scored for Newcastle in the dying seconds, with the former seeing her shot deflected past the post before the latter broke in behind and lifted her effort over the crossbar.

The Lady Magpies continued to press for an opener in extra-time, with Skelton and substitute Amy Hargrave both trying their luck from distance, to no avail.

Durham almost capitalised on Newcastle's attacking intentions and two dangerous counters, with Donnelly saving the first before Bailes made a sublime sliding challenge to thwart the visitors a second time, forcing the tie to go to penalties.

Cestria converted every one of their spot-kicks in the shootout while the Lady Magpies missed two, seeing the visitors into the next round of the competition.
