Newcastle United Under-18s suffered a derby-day defeat on Saturday, losing 3-1 at Sunderland.
Two goals in the opening half hour from Louis Salkeld handed the Black Cats the advantage at the Academy of Light.
But six minutes before the break, Ellis Stanton's fine free kick gave the Magpies hope of salvaging a result against their local rivals.
It wasn't to be for Graeme Carrick's side, though, as after Stanton had struck the woodwork just before the hour, Sunderland netted at the other end, with Will Dowling firing home the hosts' third of the contest.
The defeat ends Carrick's unbeaten start to life in charge of United's youngsters, with a home game against Stoke City next up on Saturday, 1st October (kick-off 11am BST).
