Newcastle United Under-18s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup on Saturday after a heavy defeat at Aston Villa.
The Magpies had won their opening two games in the competition against Arsenal and Manchester United, meaning they only needed a point to make sure of their place in the knockout stage going into the contest at Bodymoor Heath.
But things unravelled in the Midlands as Finley Munroe fired the hosts in front early on before Ewan Simpson made it two with just over half an hour remaining.
Scott Bailey handed United a lifeline inside the final 20 minutes, but another Munroe strike - this time from the penalty spot - looked to have made sure of Villa's victory before further efforts from Kobei Moore and Charlie Lutz added extra gloss to the scoreline.
It meant that Graeme Carrick's side finished second in their group, missing out on progression in the additional qualification spot on goal difference.
